Detail from the alabaster statue of Amenhotep III and the crocodile god Sobek. This was unearthed at the Sobek temple in Smenu (near today's Dahamsha in Upper Egypt) in 1967.
Sobek is in a human form with a crocodile head, seated and giving the Ankh with his right hand to a young Amenhotep III. Amenhotep III is wearing the Nemes headdress (a striped head cloth) with the uraeus and also displays the royal beard.
𓆋 The Faiyum area of Egypt was particularly associated with Sobek, and his worship gained popularity during the Middle Kingdom, especially under Amenhotep III who engaged in building many projects in honour of the god. The statue is in the Luxor Museum.
